The Impact of Sleep on Cognitive Function
Abstract
Sleep is essential for cognitive performance and long-term neurological health, yet the effects of sleep duration, quality, and deprivation on cognition remain characterized incompletely. This literature review synthesizes peer-reviewed research examining associations between sleep and attention, memory, executive function, processing speed, decision-making, and related neural mechanisms. Evidence across healthy and clinical populations indicates that insufficient sleep, poor sleep quality, and irregular sleep patterns are consistently associated with impaired cognitive performance. Proposed mechanisms include disrupted synaptic plasticity and memory consolidation, altered functional connectivity, impaired glymphatic clearance, neuroinflammation, and changes in brain structure and neurotransmission. Findings also suggest that both sleep duration and sleep consistency contribute to cognitive outcomes. Collectively, the evidence supports sleep as a modifiable factor in cognitive and neural health. Future research should prioritize longitudinal and interventional designs using objective sleep measures and standardized cognitive assessments.
